Selling online can open your business to customers across India and abroad. A successful store, though, needs more than a shopping cart. Use this checklist before you start.
1. Products and catalogue
- Clear, well-lit product photos from several angles.
- Accurate descriptions with sizes, materials and specifications.
- Sensible categories and filters so customers find things quickly.
2. Payments
- A payment gateway that supports UPI, cards and net banking.
- Cash on delivery, if your customers expect it.
- International payments, if you sell to the Gulf or beyond.
3. Shipping and delivery
- Decide on delivery areas, charges and estimated times.
- Consider a courier aggregator for tracking and automated labels.
- Publish a clear returns and refund policy.
4. Trust and legal pages
Customers look for terms and conditions, a privacy policy, a returns policy, and visible contact details before they buy. Include your GST details where required.
5. Mobile experience and speed
Most shoppers buy on their phones. Test the full journey, from product page to payment, on a mobile device, and make sure pages load fast.
6. Hosting and security
Online stores need reliable hosting, an SSL certificate and regular backups. A busy store may need a VPS or cloud hosting rather than a basic shared plan.
7. Marketing from day one
A store does not sell by itself. Plan for SEO, Google Shopping ads, social media and WhatsApp marketing.
